Important: Archived systems may have multiple controller and valve configurations depending on the package originally purchased. If you’re unsure which package you have, start with “Identify Your System” below.

Identify Your System (Fast)

Before you open a manual, confirm these 4 things (it saves hours):

  1. Model: PCS1, PCS2, or PCS3 (check paperwork, labels, or prior owner docs).

  2. Control type: Manual vs Automatic controller (GL235 or related variants).

  3. Pool equipment pad layout: Where the 3-way valve/bypass ties into the return line.

  4. Attic routing: Pipe entry/exit points and whether flex PVC or rigid was used.

Installation Overview (What the System Does)

SolarAttic systems heat pool water by moving it through a heat exchanger system that captures solar energy inside the attic space. Correct installation depends on:

  • Proper plumbing layout (bypass/3-way valve, correct flow direction)

  • Correct controller wiring (for automatic systems)

  • Clean attic piping route (secure, insulated where needed, leak-free)

  • Proper startup balancing (flow + valve position + controller settings)

Pre-Install Checklist (Do This First)

Safety & access

  • Verify safe attic access, lighting, and safe walking surface.

  • Confirm roof penetrations are sealed and protected.

Plumbing

  • Confirm pipe size and material compatibility.

  • Plan bypass valve location for serviceability.

  • Confirm unions and service disconnect points.

Electrical (automatic systems)

  • Confirm voltage and timer/pump wiring plan.

  • Identify controller type and sensor locations.

Recommended documentation to review first

  • Installation Methods (applies to all):

  • Dos & Don’ts:

Core Installation Topics (Applies to PCS1 / PCS2 / PCS3)

Startup & Commissioning (what to verify)

After install, verify:

  • No leaks at all unions and attic joints

  • Correct valve position for “solar on” vs “solar bypass”

  • Confirm flow feels normal at returns (not restricted)

  • Controller triggers correctly (automatic systems)

  • Water temperature rises during appropriate solar window

5) Winterization / seasonal shutdown

If your climate freezes, proper shutdown protects pipes and components.
